The True Self Series

Welcome!   This series is focused on encouraging you to reflect on your true self. Your true self transcends the habits and patterns you developed during childhood, as well as your cultural influences. Your true self is the wise seed within you that strives to experience the full expression of your connection to others, your sense of purpose, your joy, and the recognition of your self-worth. This authentic self is a reflection of your true nature and deepest desires.

One of the benefits of the work I do with individuals and couples is clarifying and practicing how to identify and speak from this deeper sense of self. In this series, we will look at characteristics of the true self.

AFFIRMATION

Calm

I am calm even when it seems conflict is inevitable.

One of the ways I know I am operating out of my true self is the sense of peace I have as I interact with situations that might have previously caused me internal and external conflict. Maintaining my sense of calm does not require me to isolate on a mountain top far from all potential stressors, but rather comes from a place of being centered in myself. My sense of truth is not in jeopardy in the face of someone else having a completely different opinion or even being reactive. It is possible for me to stay present and calm, by centering deep within myself.

It is from this calm place that I am able to respectfully and openly dialogue about my needs and the needs of the other person.

TIP

Practice Centering

Find centering techniques that work for you. Practice them during your quiet time, so that in times when the environment is particularly anxiety-provoking, you can center yourself and remain calm.

Some ideas include,

  • Breathing exercises in which you become aware of your breath and aware of your own body.
  • Feeling your feet on the ground and simply allowing your mind to travel down to the soles of your feet. This works especially well in moments when you are interacting with the world and will help you feel more centered and grounded.
  • Becoming aware of your own heartbeat and internally naming an attribute you are trying to express. This will help you center in yourself in your own intentions.
