These weekly affirmations and tips are an opportunity to try on a new idea or approach. Repeatedly doing the same thing gets us the same results. When we make a shift in our views and our approaches, everything and everyone around us will be touched by that shift and have a new experience or opportunity as a result. These affirmations and tips are invitations for you and those in your life to experience more profound respect and caring in your relationships. I hope you enjoy them.

Process

How I process my observations is my responsibility.
It can lead to happiness or unhappiness.

I recognize that the way I process the information I take in through my senses has a tremendous impact on what will happen next. This is especially true when it comes to my relationships. When I consciously choose to be tolerant, understanding, or forgiving, I am not looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. Rather, I am carefully considering what I want the outcome to be before I speak.

If my process were to lead me to complain, my complaints would have an impact on my experience. I therefore take time to make sure I am not making assumptions about the other person’s intentions or motivations.

I reflect on what I am observing before I expect a change. Are there any positive aspects I may be missing? It is true, one can see the glass as half-empty or half-full. So I ask myself, is it possible there is appreciation due? It may be upon careful inspection, I will realize that my partner is actually trying to back me up, protect me, lighten the mood, or in some way support me.

Tip:  How we view things is often habitual and arises out of attitudes we were exposed to as children. Consider whether the way you interpret your experiences is leading you to happiness? Is the way you address others leading to closeness? Is there a better way?

Imago Therapy is a relationship therapy that gives you an experience of a better way. It opens a window into the way your partner processes experiences and a way to reflect on how you process information and the habitual responses you may have formed. If you would like to try this informative experience, I would be happy to schedule a relationship therapy session with you and your significant other. To schedule a session or ask a question, call me at 816-359-1885.
