Celebration amid Change

I find new ways to celebrate that nourish me.

I am lovingly finding ways to support myself during this holiday season, especially as a I cope with changes or losses that have occurred within the last few years.  These changes may have been beyond my control or due to choices I have made.  It makes sense for me to evaluate which traditions serve me and which traditions no longer make sense for me.  I carefully design new ways to celebrate that truly support me and my relationships.  I explore ways to celebrate that leave me feeling connected as well as revitalized.

Tip:   If you are grieving as you enter the holidays, please know you are not alone.  Holidays tend to be a time when we are acutely aware of those who are no longer with us, and changes that have altered what we had anticipated or hoped for our future.  Many people have disenfranchised grief that isn’t adequately recognized by others or maybe even by themselves.   Disenfranchised grief occurs when the loss or change is not fully recognized by society or others.   It is important that you honor you own feelings and needs, as well as the impact of disappointments and losses.  You can do this by identifying the changes that have occurred in the last year and the feelings you have had.  Ask yourself, “What do I need regarding those feelings this holiday season?”  Open you mind to options for making the holidays particularly healing and supportive for you.

Do you need extra time off?  Would it be nice to schedule some quiet time to do things like read, make art, or journal?  Are there friends or family you might want to carve out some special time to share a new experience with?   Would you feel healthier if you made changes in the foods or beverages you choose to celebrate with?   Are there new ways you can socialize that might be rewarding, for example playing a new game, making music, or walking in nature with others?
