Repeatedly doing the same thing gets us the same results. When we make a shift in our views and our approaches, everything and everyone around us will be touched by that shift and have a new experience or opportunity as a result. These weekly affirmations and tips provide you with a chance to try on a new idea or approach. They are invitations for you and those in your life to experience more profound respect and caring in your relationships.
I maintain a sense of peace and calm as I move through my day.
I realize that upset has a chemical and physical consequence in my body. So, I resolve to default to a fight-or-flight response only in cases of genuine emergency, where my quick reactivity serves others and myself.
In everyday interactions and occurrences, I choose to maintain equilibrium in my body rather than subject myself to feeling the need to fight or flee. Instead, I maintain a perspective of calm and allow myself to breathe through the unexpected. I observe my surroundings with openness and acceptance, realizing that negative judgment will lead to distress. I empower myself to quietly, calmly, and slowly consider my course of action as I move through the normal occurrences of my day.
Tip: When things feel chaotic or when a conflict is occurring, take a moment to imagine calling 911. Describe the situation to the emergency operator. Allow yourself to laugh within at the absurdity of a fire engine or the police coming to handle your dirty kitchen, your kids spending too much time on their video games, or whatever it is you perceive as not going right. From this place of knowing this is not a “911 moment,” resolve to calmly select a strategy for communicating your needs. Possibly the situation calls for setting up a family meeting or requesting a private talk with your partner.
